About Oncology & Hematology Associates
Welcome. Oncology and Hematology Associates of New London, Connecticut are committed to bringing state of the art, cutting edge oncology and hematology care to Southeastern Connecticut. Our physicians and staff provide the highest quality of care in a friendly, supportive and private atmosphere. Every patient is treated as an individual, and we strive for a holistic approach that makes treatments as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
Our history begins when Dr. Richard Hellman was recruited to the area from the University of Connecticut by Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, to be the director of the Community Cancer Center. He spent 5 years there building a comprehensive program of surgical oncology, radiation oncology and a medical oncology/hematology private practice. Eventually Dr. Hellman decided to move his medical oncology/hematology practice to a brand-new facility in Shaws Cove. This beautiful office was recently expanded and offers easy parking, a bright and sunny chemotherapy suite, and on-site laboratory services and clinical trials.
We are now three physicians - Dr. Richard Hellman, Dr. Jason Haldas who was recruited in 2002, and Dr. Vanessa Johnson who was recruited in 2003 (Drs Haldas and Johnson have known each other since 1996, however, as they completed the same residency program at Brown University!). In September 2008 we also added a new member to our team, Luanne Hespeler, MPAS, PA-C (Physician Assistant). She will be helping us see patients in the hospital as a daily presence there, giving patients more continuity of care and leaving us more time to see our patients in the office. We now welcome our fourth physician! Dr. Benjamin Newton, MD is a Connecticut native who did his training at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He joined us July 1st, 2009 as a very welcome addition and is now seeing patients!
We also have an excellent support staff of chemotherapy nurses, medical assistants and office staff who take excellent care of our patients and help our office run smoothly and efficiently, with a family-like atmosphere.
We strive to have our patients always see their oncologist in follow-up and only rarely have to schedule patients with a physician or provider they are unfamiliar with. Most of oncology treatment is done in the outpatient setting, but in the event you end up hospitalized, we follow our patients in the hospital as well, working with our Physician Assistant and the Hospital Internists of New London and/or your primary care physician as a team to provide timely and expert inpatient care at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital when needed. One of our physicians is on call 24/7 for any emergency.
